Ingredients
1 cup (100g) coarsely ground coffee beans
4 cups (1 litre) cold filtered water
Equipment
Large jar or pitcher
Fine mesh strainer
Coffee filter, paper filter, or cheesecloth
Method
Add the coarsely ground coffee to a large jar.
Pour in the cold water and stir gently to ensure all grounds are saturated.
Cover and let steep at room temperature or in the refrigerator for 12 to 18 hours.
Strain the coffee through a fine mesh strainer lined with a coffee filter or cheesecloth.
Transfer the filtered cold brew concentrate to a clean container and refrigerate.
Serving
Because this recipe produces a concentrate, dilute before drinking:
Strong: 1 part cold brew to 1 part water or milk
Milder: 1 part cold brew to 2 parts water or milk
Serve over ice and add milk, cream, or sweetener if desired.
For a Stronger Café-Style Cold Brew
1½ cups (150g) coarsely ground coffee
4 cups (1 litre) water
Steep for 18-24 hours
Storage
Keep refrigerated for up to 7-10 days.
Best flavour is usually within the first week.
Pro Tip
For the smoothest, chocolatey cold brew, use a medium or medium-dark roast and grind the beans coarse, similar to raw sugar or sea salt. This helps prevent bitterness and over-extraction.
